Fetch Discord Server Compromised: Update

An update on the compromised Discord server.

2023-08-301 min readFetch.ai

As an AI and Web3 company, Fetch.ai has been attracting a lot of media attention this year. Whilst this is largely a positive thing we have also experienced a rise in malicious activity.

One attack, that took place on August 12, 2023, led to an unauthorised individual (or a group) compromising our Discord server and we are working with Discord to contain that attack.

Subsequent phishing attempts also include fake Fetch.ai websites designed to lead people into believing that Fetch.ai is holding an official giveaway of FET tokens to try and gain access to their wallet. These sites use fake website addresses and the links should be treated as dangerous. Our official communications will always come from Fetch.ai.

The attackers have also created a fake Twitter account with a gold check mark badge. This is also a phishing attempt. The only official twitter handle is @Fetch_ai.

We believe that all these phishing attempts are linked and that this is a pre-planned and systematic attack owing to the fact that Fetch.ai has been getting significant media attention this year. Unfortunately it is not uncommon in Web3 communities and there are some steps we can take to tackle these malicious actors.

Actions Taken

Since August 12, we have raised 5 tickets on Discord’s official support portal. We had a message from their support team on August 15 and we are now waiting on a further response from them. It is frustrating but we understand they can be slow to take action.

Our team and community members have additionally contacted Discord on Twitter, LinkedIn and via email, text message and Whatsapp and we are still pending a response.

We have raised multiple requests with Twitter to take down the fake account, we managed to have one of their accounts banned but they have since reinstated it under another username. We will continue to put pressure on Twitter to assist us as long as is necessary.

Regarding the fake websites, we are in active conversation with Google to take down the fake landing pages.

The ongoing phishing attempts are a serious matter and we request the community to remain vigilant and only use our official Fetch.ai community channels via our website here. There you will also find the link to our new Discord server.

Please be reassured that we are placing utmost security procedures to prevent a hack of this nature from occurring again and thank you for your support during this time.
