Virtual EV Challenge: Phase 3 - Unlocking the Power of AI Agents in Mobility with Bosch

India's leading electric vehicle (EV) simulation hackathon

2025-09-153 min readFetch.ai

The Virtual EV Challenge, co-hosted by Bosch, IPG India and Fetch.ai, has quickly become India's leading electric vehicle (EV) simulation hackathon, designed to inspire young innovators to solve the real-world challenges of sustainable mobility. With 70+ student teams from top institutions across the country, the competition is a training ground for the future of EV innovation.

As the official technology partner, Fetch.ai brings intelligent agent technology into the heart of the challenge. Our decentralized, agent-based framework allows vehicles and infrastructure to negotiate, optimize, and make autonomous decisions, mirroring the complexities of real-world EV adoption.

Now, as the challenge enters the final phase, we're excited to see students applying multi-agent negotiation and decentralized coordination in a dynamic simulation environment.

A Look Back: The Phased Journey

  • Phase 1: Building the Foundations
Teams familiarized themselves with CarMaker and Functional Mock-up Units (FMUs) while experimenting with EV energy consumption, speed management, and state-of-charge (SoC) analysis. This phase laid the groundwork by building accurate, data-rich vehicle models.

  • Phase 2: Implementing Intelligent Frameworks
With strong mentorship from industry experts, students integrated Fetch.ai's agentic framework to design intelligent charging controllers. Here, the focus was on strategy and implementation, introducing the concept of decentralized negotiation for charging and energy optimization.

  • Phase 3: The Multi-Agent Challenge
The current phase elevates the competition into a multi-ego environment where numerous vehicles and charging stations, represented as autonomous agents, must coordinate in real time. Cars request charging based on battery levels, while stations negotiate availability, congestion, and tokenized incentives. This simulates real-world competition for scarce resources, where decisions around SoC, distance, cost, and wait times must be optimized without relying on a central controller.

Why Intelligent Agents Matter in Mobility

The use of Fetch.ai's autonomous agent framework introduces unprecedented realizm into the Virtual EV Challenge:

  • Autonomous Data Exchange: Car agents continuously share SoC, velocity, and charging options with the network.

  • Dynamic Charging Coordination: Stations and vehicles negotiate allocations in real time, balancing demand with infrastructure constraints.

  • Decentralized Optimization: No central controller---agents independently negotiate to achieve the most efficient outcome.

  • Realistic Competition: Limited slots, congestion pricing, and tokenized incentives simulate the economic and logistical pressures of real EV charging ecosystems.

This is a glimpse into how decentralized AI agents will transform the mobility landscape, making EV ecosystems smarter, fairer, and more efficient.

Cultivating the Next Generation of Innovators

The Virtual EV Challenge is about building a community of forward-looking innovators who are deeply passionate about sustainable mobility. The students' work will be recognized at the ET Auto Electric Mobility Summit 2025, providing them with an invaluable platform to showcase their solutions to industry leaders.

At Fetch.ai, we believe that the future of mobility is agent-driven. The lessons learned here about negotiation, optimization, and decentralized intelligence are directly applicable to the challenges cities, automakers, and energy providers face today.

Looking Ahead

Phase 3 marks a pivotal moment in the Virtual EV Challenge. By combining Bosch's automotive expertise, IPG's world-class simulation tools, and Fetch.ai's agent-based intelligence, we're shaping the future of EV adoption in India and beyond.

The road ahead for sustainable mobility is decentralized, intelligent, and agent-powered. And this challenge proves that the next generation is already building it.

The winners of the EV Challenge will be revealed at the ET Auto Electric Mobility Summit 2025 on September 16 in Bangalore, where they'll also have the opportunity to connect directly with the Fetch.ai and Bosch team.
