One highly recommended approach to mitigate these risks is for validators to meticulously structure their network topology using a sentry node architecture.
Sentry nodes act as intermediaries between the validator node and the rest of the network. They are strategically placed to handle external connections and absorb potential DDoS attacks. Sentry nodes are usually exposed to the internet, allowing them to handle incoming traffic.
Validator nodes should exclusively connect to full-nodes they have confidence in, either because they operate them themselves or because they are managed by other validators with whom they have established a social connection. This architecture shifts the burden of withstanding a denial-of-service attack from the validator's node directly to its sentry nodes. It may necessitate the deployment or activation of new sentry nodes to counteract attacks on existing ones.
Sentry nodes can be rapidly deployed or have their IP addresses changed. Since the links to the sentry nodes exist in a private IP space, they are shielded from direct disruption by internet-based attacks. This ensures that validator block proposals and votes consistently reach the rest of the network.
